BATON ROUGE, LA — After transforming Southern University Laboratory School's girls basketball program into a state powerhouse, Head Coach Quianna Chaney — affectionately known as "Coach Q" — is leaving the program to pursue her dream of coaching at the collegiate level. Coach Q has accepted an assistant coaching position at Grambling State University, marking the next chapter in an already remarkable basketball journey.
Coach Q's impact at Southern Lab has been nothing short of extraordinary. She guided the Lady Kittens to three LHSAA State Championships, winning titles in 2022, 2024, and 2025. Under her leadership, the program went from virtually nonexistent to a dominant force, known for its discipline, heart, and championship mindset.
"High school was the foundation," Coach Q said when reflecting on her departure. "Every player, every lesson, and every moment has prepared me for this next chapter. Leaving isn't easy when you've poured your heart into a program and its players, but I'm grateful for the journey and excited for the opportunity to continue growing and impacting lives at the collegiate level."
Her record speaks volumes: over 100 wins, three 1,000-point scorers, and countless moments of inspiration both on and off the court. But for those who watched her work, the numbers only tell part of the story.
"She went from not having a team one year to building a championship culture from the ground up—bringing home three state titles in four seasons," said Thomas B. Saulsby II, the Director of Athletics at SULS. "That kind of success doesn't happen by accident. It takes vision, leadership, and relentless dedication. Replacing someone like Coach Q won't be easy, because you don't just replace a legacy overnight. I always tell people we were lucky to have her here longer than we were supposed to, and for that, we'll be forever grateful. Her impact on this program and our students will be felt for years to come."
Coach Q's departure marks the end of a historic era at Southern Lab, but her legacy is firmly rooted in the culture she helped create. She didn't just win games—she built a program. Her players didn't just improve their skills—they grew as leaders, competitors, and young women prepared for life beyond the court.
As she steps onto the college stage at Grambling State, Coach Q carries with her the pride of Southern Lab, a resume full of success, and the same fiery passion that restored a dormant high school program into a championship dynasty.
Grambling is gaining a proven winner. Southern Lab is sending off a legend.
